Emission Abatement

Emission reduction or emission abatement occurs where an organisation or individual changes or replaces a process or activity in order to reduce the amount of direct emissions of GHGs from its "business as usual" operations (i.e. changing the vehicle fleet over from fossil based fuel to a bio-fuel manufactured from renewable sources) or changes or replaces a process or activity in order to reduce the consumption of a product or service that has a known emission intensity (i.e. reducing the amount of electricity used per unit of production).

In order to encourage emission reduction and abatement the Commonwealth government formed the Greenhouse Challenge Plus™ Programme and Greenhouse Friendly™ Programme. The Programme's aims are to encourage a reduction in Australian greenhouse gas emissions and are administered by the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts on behalf of the Commonwealth.
